We hear over and over again that fats will make us fat. The fact is, some fats are actually amazing for your health and will help you lose weight! Today we’re going to be talking about how not all fat is bad for us. Actually here are seven that are good for us.
I think fat got a bad reputation, especially if you grew up in the ’70s, ’80s, or ’90s. You were taught to believe that fat was bad and that fat makes us fat. That is wrong. The wrong fats will make us fat and then eating too much fat will make us fat, but not eating enough fat is also going to make us fat.
What can we do here to be on that middle path and how can we navigate? The first thing we have to do is eliminate any trans fats or hydrogenated fats from our diets. Read labels to make sure, most of the time it’s in very refined foods. This is going to make us more fat and it’s toxic to our system.
Also looking at the toxicity of this bad fat, it’s going to compromise our cardiovascular system and our immune system. It’s going to create behavioral problems. It’s been linked to weight gain and skin breakouts. This is a big thing, and we have to have awareness about it.
What does fat do exactly? Fat is about having insulation in the body and also aids in vitamin and mineral absorption. These vitamins include A, D, E, and K. You have to have fat to be able to absorb and assimilate those vitamins.
It also protects our organs and helps with a steady metabolism. If we’re trying to lose weight, we’re trying to have that stabilized energy all day long, we want to be working off fat. It’s more stabilized than refined carbs.
It also keeps hormone levels consistent and helps our nervous system. We have the myelin sheath. How we communicate with our neurons is through action potentials, and this coating of the myelin sheath is good fats.
Healthy fats also nourish our skin and our hair and our nails. When I started having good fats, it was amazing how I had dewy skin and I had good nails. I always had weak nails growing up.
Also, it’s a lubrication to all our cells. So we have upwards of 10 trillion cells in our body, and they’re all covered in lipids and cholesterol and good fats.
So, what are my top fats here that you can incorporate into your diet so you can start having these benefits?
#1. Avocados. Avocado is such a superfood, and it’s something I really recommend. I have half of an avocado a day. This will also helps with constipation if you’re constipated, but it has so many great benefits.
#2. Organic Extra virgin olive oil. So this is probably the most studied good fat out there and anything from the Mediterranean diet to just overall health. It’s something that I use in salads and it’s something that I cook with if I have a low or medium heat. With high heat, I do not use it.
#3. Udo’s oil. Especially if you’re a vegan or vegetarian, this is a great way to go. This is something I’ve put in my shakes, and it’s really good fats. There’s primrose oil in it and flaxseed.
#4. Omega-3-6-9 supplement. Omega-3 is going to bring the inflammation down. It’s going to lubricate everything especially the EPA and DHA. I recommend to get the highest quality omega-3-6-9 supplement onboard so high EPA and DHA. There’s also a vegan option through Nordic Naturals. I really like that brand so that’s something you can check out as well.
#5. Organic coconut oil. There is a lot of research out there with coconut oil helping with our health. I think we’re going a little crazy about organic coconut oil, too much is not good. Just the coconut oil can be very dense if you have too much on the liver especially. It can really strain and congest the liver. All fats, if you have too much, are going to congest the liver. There’s a delicate balance.
#6. Organic avocado oil. This is great if you’re heating things in high temperatures and great for salads.
#7. Organic eggs. You might have a sensitivity, allergy, or not do well, but for me, eggs is a superfood. I do extremely well on eggs. The yolk especially is such good fat. I don’t have a lot of eggs, just in moderation.
